The Sandstone Volunteers' Group - Work at Harrison's Rocks Winter 2012.

Thanks for offering to help out with the tree management and crag work at Harrison's Rocks. If you've not yet committed to a particular day, don't let that put you off coming out to help!

The work is manual/physical but there are jobs for helpers with all skill and strength levels - you don't need to be superhuman.

It's best you use your old clothes for work days - it's not the day to show off your new Arcteryx jacket. Old clothes, sturdy boots, waterproof jacket, gardening or heavy-duty gloves and a packed lunch/drink will be required for all the work days.

The kind of tools that are most useful for work days include bowsaws, pruners, secateurs and spades. If you have any of these, please bring them along - probably best to put your name on them or mark them so that you can identify them.

We plan to meet at 09:30 in the car park at Harrison's on all the days so that we have an idea of numbers and can brief you on the work planned. If you arrive after this time, we'll be at the crag - please come and find the work leader before you start work.

These are the work days planned at present for Harrison's this winter…

Saturday 24th November 2012: Update (23 Nov) Weather forecast is poor. We will work but if you prefer to come out on Sunday 25th, the forecast is better! 09:30 start.

Sunday 25th November 2012: Forecast good - work day as planned. 09:30 start.

Saturday 1st December 2012: Work day planned - more info later

Sunday 2nd December 2012: Work day planned - more info later

The work will include clearing the ground after tree felling - moving the arisings to where they're needed for path definition, fence/hurdle building/brashing, Repairs and re-establishment of footpaths and further work on existing revetments, construction of habitat piles. Useful tools include:
Pruners, Bowsaw, secateurs for arising clearance

Spade, Shovel, Club hammer, hand axe, Builders' Buckets for Revetment work

If we have to cancel a day for any reason, I'll make sure I email round but check this page before you leave home!

Any queries, please contact me adcock @ clara.net
Thanks,
Graham.

Brief report of the work done on the 'revetment' days -
Saturday 10th November 2012:
Building of Revetments from the material currently laid-up below the Root Route / Cottonsocks Traverse area. This work is needed to rebuild and improve the footway below the crag and will utilise the timber to hold back and then back fill with material transported up from loser down the slope.
Useful tools include bow or hand saw, hand axe, felling axe, sledge/club hammer, Spade/shovel/fork, Builders' buckets, a wheelbarrow, Pruners/pruning saw.
8 of us worked on Saturday in light rain building revetments under Cotton Socks Traverse (Root Routes) and then along to and beyond sliding corner. Not as many could make it as had said they would but we got a lot done. Thanks to all who came out and helped.

Sunday 11th November 2012:
Further work on revetments, drainage channels and maybe some cleaning work on the crag itself.
Useful tools include bow or hand saw, hand axe, felling axe, sledge/club hammer, Spade/shovel/fork, Builders' buckets, a wheelbarrow, Pruners/pruning saw. We may carry out some work on the crag - cleaning some of the vegetated routes. A further day of revetment work and drainage gully clearance/digging under the Squat Tower (The Vice) and also under St Gothard. Again not as many could make it as had said they would but a lot was achieved. Thanks to all who came out and helped.
