The Bulls Hollow Restoration Project.

After the successful scrub clearance and tree maintenance in November and December 2003, the next phase is the clean the crag top and complete the maintenance on a few of the crag top trees. We will also be looking at ways of reducing the bogs at the base of the crag, possibly by improving the drainage ditches revealed during scrub clearance and maybe adding further channels. The date has yet to be decided but will likely be into February 2004.

Needs a channel cutting throughBog 'B'The diagram left shows a plan of the crag with the two bogs marked in grey. The hump to the east of Bog 'A' (under Centurion's Groove) is holding water back and it has been suggested that breaching it with a ditch may reduce the water level. The land drops away to the east.
There appears to have been attempts to drain Bog 'B' (under Trident Terrace) in the past as there are existing drainage channels although these are not deep enough to drain the water away.

If you're an expert in this type of work (draining bogs!) we need advice on the best way of reducing the surface water below the crag. If you have have suggestions as to what might be done, please let me know.

The Tunbridge Wells Commons Conservators are arranging for the tree trunks that remain to be dragged clear of the crag base to form 'habitat' for the local wildlife. This is likely to happen around the end of March when the ground has dried a bit more in order to do minimum damage to the ground with the vehicles.

We're also arranging for the two signs to be replaced.

I'm aware nothing appears to be happening at present - I'm waiting for other agencies and they won't be hurried! However, I called in at Bulls Hollow yesterday (Sunday 22nd Feb) and the sun was shining (for a short while). The place was looking good...I almost got my shoes on to do Broken Nose...

Thanks for your support - Cheers, Graham.
